Background of Business
New parents often need to juggle their lifestyle to meet the needs of their first child. But little Daniel's arrival in the world prompted his mum and dad Jennie-Marie and Richard Glover to pursue another life-changing initiative by starting their own business, a child minding service, at their home in Tyersal. To achieve their objective they turned for advice to Bradford Kickstart, gaining benefit from several programme partners to plan and launch Jen & Rich's Childminding Services in May, 2009.
Support Journey
An initial call to Kickstart led to several meetings with Shamsul Arafen, a Business Counsellor at Manningham-based ATL Enterprise. Guidance on writing a strong business plan required for the new venture was associated with introductions to other partners within the Kickstart programme. As a result, Richard attended a number of Kickstart training workshops and successfully applied for assistance under the programme's Professional Services scheme. This enabled the new business to have well-designed promotional literature which has proved effective in building awareness. It also prompted enquiries from parents looking for childminding services offered by qualified practitioners holding the national Diploma in Home Based Child Care. Says Jennie-Marie: "Setting up in business can be a daunting challenge at the best of times but the support and guidance we have received through ATL and Kickstart has proved crucial. It has been really helpful having a business friend like Shamsul close at hand."
Where are they now
With their son Daniel, now aged almost two, as their first ‘client,' the business has got off to a very positive start, boosted by the marketing support provided free of charge by Kickstart. Eight parents already entrust the care of their children, aged from just after birth to age five, to Jen and Rich, who have already provided part time employment to suitably qualified assistants. The couple love working together and are growing their business upon the sound platform of providing quality services to parents in Tyersal and its surrounding neighbourhoods. They have transformed a large conservatory at their home into a light, warm and homely nursery, with an impressive range of play and educational activities. And they appreciate that, as they grow their business, advice will continue to be available to them through the Kickstart programme.
