Background of Business
Manjinder Sarai is an enterprising Bradfordian with an eye for a business opportunity. While passing through Menston rail station he spotted a run-down building which, years ago, was the station buffet. He realised that many smaller rail stations are increasingly used by commuters and other passengers but have no refreshment facilities. Menston station, he decided, was the ideal location for a quality food and drink outlet. Manjinder began negotiations with Northern Rail, the award-winning rail service operator, with a view to leasing the premises. At this stage he recognised that specialist business advice was needed, so he contacted Kickstart and began a series of meetings with Colin Holmes, a Business Counsellor based at Bradford Chamber.
Support Journey
Colin advised Manjinder on writing a strong business plan, with a particular focus on cash flow forecasting based on the numbers of passengers known to be using Menston station. Together, they recognised that a strong brand for the outlet was essential, especially if similar outlets were to be opened at other rail stations in the North. Manjinder decided to call the business Zsphera (pronounced ‘Sfaira’) and successfully applied for marketing support through the Kickstart professional services programme. Three creative agencies based in the Bradford District were invited to respond to a design brief. “We wanted to work with a designer who was passionate about the concept and the designer we selected has captured the feel and essence of the vision.” The result is a Trade Marked brand identity and logo which will be seen for the first time in Menston but, if Manjinder meets his business objectives, will eventually become a familiar name at stations across the Yorkshire region.
Where are they now
Zsphera opened for business in late October 2008, bright and early at 6am to catch the first commuters as they begin their journey from Menston station. Initially the retail offer will be a choice of hot drink, including quality blend coffee, Yorkshire tea or drinking chocolate. A range of pastries and other snacks will also be available. All drinks will be sold in strong disposable cups, with lids, designed to be taken on board a train. As the business grows Manjinder will introduce sandwiches, freshly made that day by a local supplier. Quick but courteous service will be provided by Manjinder and a full-time assistant who has already been recruited. The sales forecast for the first year indicated that Zsphera’s turnover would far exceed the VAT threshold so the company’s accountant has already registered the business for VAT. To celebrate the launch of the exciting venture the Managing Director of Northern Rail, Heidi Mottram, agreed personally to hand the keys to the premises to Manjinder. There can be no doubt that, even from day one, Zsphera will be a business on the right lines…!
