Ask Julie
When did you start your business?:
Officially I started my company on the 1 May 2006 but I didn’t really get going until October 2006. I spent most of the first six months attending courses and seminars about running a business, which in hindsight I should have done before I set up the business.
What do you do?:
I work closely with small businesses setting up systems and processes and helping with recruitment. This in turn builds strong foundations for office administration. I offer help and advice about core business elements which many smaller enterprises may not be experienced with – such as Sage book-keeping, recruitment, petty-cash and mileage logs to name but a few.
What made you want to set up your own business?:
I always knew I was good at setting up systems and processes, having a very logical mind. I always felt as though I had more to give and knew there was a market for the services I could provide. Once it was clear in my mind how I was going to put this into action I took the plunge to set up my own business.
What is the biggest problem you have faced?:
Working alone. I started off working from home and this made me feel very lonely at times – plus it can sometimes be difficult to motivate yourself.
How long were you thinking about starting up?:
I had a bad car crash in 1998 and, afterwards, I left my job in corporate finance and couldn’t decide what I wanted to do. I then worked in a huge variety of different jobs in which I learnt lots of different skills but never really felt that I had found my vocation. I loved administration but being a PA just wasn’t challenging enough. I started to formulate a plan about working for myself roughly five years ago but it has taken me since then to build up the courage to make it a reality.
What is your greatest success?:
Taking the plunge and getting through the first year. It was a great feeling taking my year-end paperwork to the accountant and thinking “I’m still here!”.
What is the most important quality you need to work for yourself?:
Self-motivation
What do you love most about working for yourself?:
I absolutely love the variety of customers I deal with – no two companies or challenges are the same – and I really feel that I am making a difference.
How has Bradford Kickstart helped you?:
In February 2007 I met a Bradford Kickstart representative at a net-working event in Bradford. They have been great! I have had help with my website and branding, plus great advice from my mentor. However, the very best thing about Bradford Kickstart is knowing that there are people who do care – and who really want you to succeed.
What advice would you give other people about setting up a business?:
Get as much information and advice as you can. If possible, speak to a business advisor and discuss your ideas – it can be a real eye-opener when they go through the pros and cons.
